UN chief welcomes Aliyev-Pashinyan meeting as peace effort

The July 10 meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Abu Dhabi is viewed by the United Nations as a step toward solidifying agreement on the text of a peace treaty. This assessment was shared by Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in response to a query from the U.S.-based Report agency.

According to Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General is closely monitoring the ongoing positive developments between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We welcome this dialogue between two countries that have experienced long-standing tensions. We recall the agreement reached in March on a peace treaty and consider it a very positive development. This meeting can be viewed as a step toward strengthening consensus on the treaty text. The Secretary-General is following these developments very closely,” Dujarric emphasized.

On July 10, Pashinyan and Aliyev met in Abu Dhabi to discuss various aspects of normalizing interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The sides reaffirmed that bilateral negotiations are the most effective format for addressing all issues related to normalization and agreed to continue this result-oriented dialogue. The meeting lasted about five hours.
