Pashinyan tells Mishustin Armenia to stay in EAEU

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin during an international forum on nature and environmental protection in Russia’s Altai Republic.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk stated that Armenia has expressed its intention to continue participating in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to TASS.

“Overall, Armenia is inclined to continue working within the Eurasian Economic Union, and this was discussed again today,” Overchuk said, responding to questions about Armenia’s potential EU membership.

On March 26, Armenia’s National Assembly approved in second and final reading a bill initiating the country’s EU accession process. The government endorsed the initiative—proposed by the civil movement Eurovote—on January 9. However, the EU has yet to formally invite Armenia to join, and opposition parties have dismissed the legislation as legally absurd. The Armenian president signed it into law.

Overchuk added that Armenia cannot “sit on two chairs” and will eventually have to choose between the EAEU and the EU.
