ATAMAN OF CUBAN COSSACKS WORRIED WITH PARTICIPATION OF ARMENIAN IN RUN FOR GOVERNOR POST

Members of the Armenian delegation, who are in Kuban to clear up the current situation because of the threat of deportation of Armenians from the Territory, have met with ataman of Cuban Cossack troops Vladimir Gromov. As “De-Fact” agency reports, speaking about migration issues that have recently become tense, Gromov divided the Armenians residing in the Krasnodar Territory into several groups: native Armenians that have lived in Kuban for over hundreds of years, Armenians who arrived in Kuban in 50-s because of exculpation of Armenians exiled to Crimea. Ataman considers this group native too, and Armenians that arrived in the Territory after well-known events in Azerbaijan and earthquake in Armenia. According to ataman, the population of Kuban is worried with the “rush” of Armenians from the last group. A part of these migrants have already become Russian citizens but many of them being engaged in commerce or working in construction sites are illegal in the Territory. The increase in their number is the reason for the abrupt negative attitude of “the local population”. This attitude towards Armenians, as the ataman noted, has been expressed, for example, through ambiguous reaction to the building of Armenian Church in Krasnodar or participation of Armenians in the last run for governor post. Speaking about the act of vandalism in the cemetery of Krasnodar, when headstones of graves of Armenians were destroyed, Vladimir Gromov condemned what happened. The ataman of the Cuban Cossack troops considers one of the reasons of tense relations between Russians and Armenians is the difference in mentality: “Armenians differ from Russians in their liveliness, enterprising skills and activity in business and, against the background of common poverty in the Territory, the abundance of Armenians in commerce and business is taken negatively by the local population”. The chair of the commission for foreign relations of the Armenian parliament and the heads of the parliamentary delegation of Armenia to the PACE Hovanes Hovanissian in his turn noted “number of Armenians in the Territory should not scare the local population”. According to him, the problem will disappear with the solution of the social economic issues.
