Iran’s Foreign Ministry has lodged formal complaints with Azerbaijan regarding reported mistreatment of Iranian citizens in Azerbaijani prisons. The issue was raised by the ministry’s spokesperson Esmail Baghaei during a press briefing, as reported by Tasnim News Agency.
“We have received concerning reports about the mistreatment of our citizens held in Azerbaijani prisons. This is a serious issue. We have conveyed our protests and concerns to Baku through multiple diplomatic notes,” Baghaei said, according to Factor.am .
He emphasized that Iran expects Azerbaijan to treat detainees in accordance with international human rights obligations: “Proper treatment in line with human rights commitments is our legitimate expectation. The Vienna Convention on Consular Relations is very clear in this regard.”
Baghaei also mentioned that a prisoner exchange agreement exists between Iran and Azerbaijan, and the matter remains on the agenda of Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
