Peace deal in U.S. to mark Caucasus liberation: Saakashvili

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has claimed that the signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the United States would mark “a day of liberation of the Caucasus from the Russian Federation.”

In a post on his Facebook page, Saakashvili said a major historic event was set to take place in Washington, where Armenia and Azerbaijan would sign a peace treaty with the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Aliyev and Pashinyan have been negotiating for a long time, but the U.S. President’s involvement accelerated the process,” he wrote.

He emphasized that today could become a historic milestone—the day the Caucasus frees itself from Russia’s grip.

Saakashvili added that Russia has already effectively lost its dominance over two of the three South Caucasus countries, and its influence on Georgia, in his words, is only “theoretical,” exercised through the political structure known as Georgian Dream.

On August 8, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the White House. The separate bilateral meetings will be followed by a trilateral summit.

A senior White House official, speaking anonymously to The Washington Post, said there is a possibility that the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be officially announced during the meeting with Trump.
