EU envoy visits Nakhichevan to review transport links

Magdalena Gronon, the European Union’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, visited Nakhichevan during her trip to Azerbaijan to review transport infrastructure. She wrote about the visit on X.

“In Nakhichevan, I met with the president’s representative Najafli, familiarized myself with transport infrastructure, and discussed potential cooperation opportunities with the EU,” Gronon stated.

She added that during meetings in Baku, recent political developments were also discussed.

“I express deep gratitude for the meetings at this strategic moment for the region’s peaceful future with President Ilham Aliyev, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, and other Azerbaijani officials. These discussions built on the Azerbaijan–Armenia bilateral dialogue and the historic agreements reached in Washington. I conveyed the EU’s message of readiness to support all aspects of the settlement, including connectivity, delivering peace dividends for the region, and addressing humanitarian challenges and legacies of the past,” she said.

In Washington, the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States—Nikol Pashinyan, Ilham Aliyev, and Donald Trump—formally agreed to launch the Trump Route. The corridor will allow Azerbaijan to access Nakhichevan while fully respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. Armenia will also form an exclusive partnership with the U.S. to develop this corridor, which may be extended for up to 99 years, with a commitment for further extension. “We expect serious infrastructure development. American companies are eager to enter these countries and invest heavily, bringing economic benefits to all three states,” Trump stated.
