Expert: Tehran ready to give Armenia security guarantees

Speaking to reporters during the conference “Artsakh: Unresolved Conflict, Right of Return,” Iranian expert on Caucasus affairs Ehsan Movahedian said Syunik remains a red line for Iran, and Tehran is ready to provide security guarantees to Armenia.

“It depends on U.S. actions. If they try to cut the Armenia–Iran border, there will be an adequate response from us,” Movahedian said, according to Panorama.am.

He stressed that Iran and Armenia are natural neighbors.

“Naturally, if there are issues related to Armenia’s security, Iran can provide guarantees. These matters also directly affect Iran,” the expert noted.

Movahedian was commenting on questions about how Iran perceives the document signed in Washington and whether the Iranian president’s visit helped ease concerns.

“We are confident the U.S. is not coming to Armenia to provide security, but to destabilize the region — to harm Iran, Russia, and later China,” he said.

According to him, the U.S. seeks to escalate tensions in Armenia by fostering internal divisions.

On August 8, during a trilateral meeting at the White House between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, a joint declaration was signed. On the same occasion, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the three leaders, initialed the “Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
