Former Armenia national team striker Yura Movsisyan has emphasized the importance of developing youth football and ensuring government support to improve the sport in the country, RFE/RL reports.
“We must start with youth football and coach education. I’ve always said that those who work with children should also undergo psychological training to know how to interact with kids. State support is crucial and must be in place. If we want rapid development in our football, we definitely need state backing,” Movsisyan said.
He cited Georgia as an example of a country where state involvement has positively impacted football.
“It’s a fact that Georgian football enjoys state support. If we had the same in Armenia, I believe we could achieve the same or even greater success,” he added.
Speaking about the Armenia–Portugal match, Movsisyan noted that Portugal is currently among the strongest teams in the world, likely ranked second or third globally. He stressed that this was the first match under newly appointed national team coach Yeghishe Melikyan, who still needs time.
“I saw very positive changes: spirit, determination, and belief among the players. It was very difficult to demonstrate that, but hopefully, they will show it more clearly in upcoming games,” he said.
Familiar with Melikyan’s character, Movsisyan expressed confidence that in a short time there would be visible improvements in both player mentality and approach. He predicted a different performance in the upcoming match against Ireland, adding that the Portugal game was especially tough, both physically and mentally, and that the first game under a new coach is always the hardest. However, he believes the players will feel calmer and more confident going forward.
Movsisyan also revealed that he met with the team two days before the match and had a brief conversation with the players. He described the team atmosphere as positive, something he hopes will strengthen over time.
Reflecting on the difference between his generation and the current national team, Movsisyan said:
“It’s hard to compare. But one major difference is that we weren’t afraid to lose. When we stepped onto the pitch, we were sure we would win, no matter who we were facing. We played Portugal and other strong teams with that belief. Personally, I always entered the pitch convinced I’d score—it was my mindset. Sure, I didn’t score in every game, but that early confidence matters. Yesterday, you could see a lack of confidence in the players. They also lacked the support of fans and the football community. I urge Armenians to support and inspire our team. Let’s not start criticizing. Let’s give our coach and players time—they’ll show their best,” he said.
Asked to name the greatest player in Armenian football history, Movsisyan answered without hesitation: Mkhitaryan.
“Henrikh. It’s not even up for debate. There’s no one beyond him to single out—he’s the best. I’m genuinely saddened that he’s no longer part of our national team,” Movsisyan said.
On September 6, Armenia lost 0–5 to Portugal in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier held in Yerevan.
