Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, speaking at the Italian Institute for International Political Studies in Rome, said Turkey expects Armenia and Azerbaijan to sign a peace agreement in the first half of 2026.
He expressed gratitude to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and U.S. President Donald Trump for their support in the preliminary signing process held in Washington.
Fidan also emphasized the significance of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s “historic steps toward peace and normalization with Azerbaijan, especially following recent developments in Nagorno-Karabakh.”
“When the final signatures are put on the Armenia-Azerbaijan agreement, we will swiftly normalize relations with Armenia,” Fidan stated.
On September 12, Turkey’s special envoy for normalization with Armenia, Serdar Kılıç, visited Yerevan and held meetings with Armenian envoy Ruben Rubinyan and Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
The special envoys reaffirmed the issues discussed and agreed upon during previous meetings, aimed at fully normalizing Armenia-Turkey relations. In this context, they exchanged views on implementing the border-crossing agreement reached on July 1, 2022. Both sides agreed to accelerate this process.
