A group of believers from Javakhk have published an open letter calling on Armenian authorities not to persecute the Armenian Apostolic Church and its Catholicos.
The letter stresses that after the 44-day war, instead of uniting society, the government targeted the church, an institution that preserved Armenian identity even in times without statehood. They condemned the arrest of two clerics and accusations against Catholicos Karekin II, calling them attacks on the church’s authority.
The faithful urged Yerevan to respect the separation of church and politics, warning that undermining the church endangers Armenian values. They added that surrendering territories is a far greater crime than any alleged breach of oath.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the Catholicosate would be “liberated” the same way Armenia was in 2018, suggesting major reforms in Echmiadzin.
