ISSUE ON ARMENIA’S WITHDRAWAL FROM LIST OF COUNTRIES TO WHICH JACKSON-VENICK’S AMENDMENT APPLIES POSTPONED

The committee for international affairs of the US Congress Senate passed a decision to postpone the consideration of the issue on withdrawal of Armenia and SIC other seven countries from the list of the states, to which the Jackson-Venick’s amendment applies. It should be reminded the amendment stipulates trade restrictions. Sanctions imposed against the Soviet Union in 1974 on the initiative of congressmen Jackson and Venick, after the collapse of the USSR have applied to the CIS countries. The discussion of the issue on the need to repeal Jackson-Venick’s amendment towards Armenia and other seven countries started in the Congress in early January. The repeal of the amendment will save Armenian exporters from the high customs tariffs and this will make the Armenian industrial and agricultural production more competitive. The opponents to the sanction lifting explained their attitude with the desire to achieve the settlement of the issue regarding lifting of restrictions on import of chicken to Russia. As Russia is in the list of the countries that were supposed to be saved from the sanctions, Armenia has become a victim of “trade war” between Moscow and Washington.
