According to yesterday situation 162 U.S. Representatives have signed message to President George Bush urging to keep his campaign pledge and characterize the 1915 events in Ottoman Turkey as “Armenian genocide”. The congressmen have expressed their hope that the President in his annual April 24 address will characterize the Armenian genocide as “genocide”. The collecting of the signatures on the letter to the President will finish tomorrow. Several House members have addressed President Bush individually with similar statements regarding his forthcoming address. The statements to name the events with their real names were addressed by Reps. Chris Cox (R-CA), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), and John Sununu (R-NH). In her letter Rep. Lee noted that, “genocide is the most potent of all crimes against humanity because it is an effort to wipe out a people and a culture. The Armenian Genocide must never be forgotten.” The Armenian National Committee of America has thanked Congressmen Knollenberg and Pallone for their leadership of this initiative and for all their efforts toward securing official U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide. “Today, as we confront the architects of world-wide terrorism, the need for full U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide is more important than ever,” said Hamparian.
