The issue on the situation in Samtskhe-Javakhetia populated by Armenians is planned to be considered at the meeting of the national Security Council of Georgia. As «Arminfo» agency reports with reference to «BS-Press» agency, this decision was made according to results of closed hearings in the committee of the Georgian parliament for defense and security in which leaderships of foreign ministry, state security and internal affairs participated. The actively discussed Javakhetia problem after the local public and political organizations had stated about the necessity to give the region a status of autonomy served a background for the hearings.
Georgian foreign minister Irakli Menagarishvili participating in the meeting noted that the main issues of the hearings were the possible consequences of the planned withdrawal of the Russian military base from the region. According to the minister, this might become a serious problem as today a part of the Samthkhe-Javakhetia population is employed due to the Russian base. «It is a serious social-economic problem and its solution will remove the Javakhetia issue from the agenda», thinks Irakli Menagarishvili. The minister said that the terms of the base withdrawal from Samtskhe Javakhetia was still an item of Russian-Georgian talks, the next stage of which is planned to be held in March. The Russian part insists on the fourteen-year term for disbandment of the base while Georgian side does not agree to this and offers a three-year term.
