There are contradictions concerning other issues as well. In particular, not all the supporters of Demirchyan share the opinion that only thanks to the pressure of the opposition it became possible to prevent that Robert Kocharian is declared President following the first round. This is what the internet-magazine of the ”A1+” oppositional TV channel writes: ”The rumors that the CEC was going to announce that Robert Kocharian has got 52% of the votes were not confirmed”. In this case, it is not understandable, why does the opposition agitate people if Stepan Demirchyan does not consider himself an elected President, agreeing to participate in the second round, and from the very beginning Robert Kocharian was not going to announce himself President in the first round.
Unlike many of his supporters, Stepan Demirchyan speaks most of all about the importance of providing the transparency of the second round of elections. Meanwhile, a certain part of the opposition thinks that Demirchyan in reality has got less votes than another oppositional candidate, Artashes Geghamyan. For example, Paruyr Hayrikyan, leader of the Self Determination party, who believes that in the second round Robert Kocharian should be in rival not with the leader of the people’s party but with the leader of the ”National Unity” party. The candidate, who was in the 3rd place with 17,5% of votes, refused to bequeath his votes to the oppositional candidate. It means that Robert Kocharian can count on the votes of an essential part of Artashes Geghamyan’s electorate.
Some of the parties supporting Geghamyan in the first round, do not hide that in the second round they will prefer Kocharian. An essential number of members of the communist party considers the alliance with Demirchyan impossible. Hayrikyan has stated recently that he is afraid of the ”revolutionary character” of Demirchyan and of the fact that people surrounding the Presidential candidate permit themselves to make illegal statements. He is concerned with the fact that the candidate has surrounded himself with political figures from the former regime. Besides, the matter concerns also some field commanders who were once involved in the official structures of the Defense Ministry and later driven away from the army because of inaccuracy. It is known that they are actively contacting now with leaders of the ”Republic” party supporting Demirchyan which are trying to use the former army soldiers in the conflict with the incumbent President. Robert Kocharian meant these persons when speaking about the organizers of the falsifications in favor of Stepan Demirchyan.
The efforts of some supporters of Demirchyan to involve the structures of the militarized organization in the political struggle are not favorable for the leader of the People’s party. A political figure which is in the beginning of his career should not accept services of ”insulted” soldiers, the relations with which may have a negative affect on the rather non-discredited reputation of the Presidential candidate. There is an impression that Stepan Demirchyan is not able to control the situation among his supporters. It seems that people preferring to remain in secret decide everything here.
