EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT TO CONSIDER BILL OF RESOLUTION CALLING ON ANKARA TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Voting on the resolution on the relations between the European Union and the countries of the Southern Caucasus will be held soon in the European Parliament. As reported by “Arminfo” agency making reference to the press office of the forum of Armenian Associations of Europe, the resolution draft is presented by Swedish parliamentarian Per Harkhton. The document includes a report on the social, economic and political situation in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as information on the corruption level, condition of human rights and freedom of speech. The resolution makes propositions of strengthening the EU policy in the Southern Caucasus region. In particular, it is planned to appoint a special envoy and to open EU representations in Yerevan and Baku to encourage the intentions of Armenia and Azerbaijan to become EU members in the future. The resolution also supports the idea of creating a Pact on stability in the Caucasus similar to the pattern of the Balkan states. Significance is attached to the role of Russia, Turkey and Iran in the Southern Caucasus region. The European Union calls on these countries to use their influence in a constructive way to establish stability and peace in the region. Besides, the resolution authors call on Ankara to recognize the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 and to lift the blockade of Armenia.
