Vardan Minasyan: Azerbaijan refused to play with us in 2006

Armenian and Azerbaijani soccer teams will not be able to compete due to political relations, apasport.az reported allegedly quoting acting chief coach of Armenia Vardan Minasyan as saying. "We are not ready to compete with Azerbaijan. It’s still too early to be in the same group," Minasyan allegedly said

Meanwhile, as Vardan Minasyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, he gave an interview only to Russian Sport-Express.

"I said that our teams cannot play due to political relations. Even in 2006 we were in one group and then the national team of Azerbaijan refused to play with us, because the Armenian team headed by Ian Porterfild was stronger than Azeri team, Minasyan said.

In the qualifying match of Euro 2008 teams of Armenia and Azerbaijan appeared in the same group based on the draw, but did not played since Azerbaijan refused to ensure the security of the Armenian football players and teams lost points.

In 2007, the Presidents of FIFA and UEFA, Michel Platini and Blatter Zep, while in Yerevan, said that Armenia and Azerbaijan, as countries in conflict, cannot play in one group.
