Repeated European and World Champion in long jump Robert Emmiyan was elected President of the Armenian Federation of Athletics on April 30.
“Unfortunately, there are no facilities to develop athletics in our country. I have already met with the sport leadership of Armenia and, hopefully, we will be able to restore traditions,” Emmiyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.
According to him, there are good young athletes in Armenia. “I believes that they will manage to succeed in international competitions,” he said.
“The Federation will do its best to construct new sport halls in Armenia and Artsakh,” he said.
Armenia has been hosting an international athletics competition for eight consecutive years. The competition will be held also in 2010, and Emmiyan wishes the competition could bring together athletes from as many countries as possible.
Emmiyan set the European record (8m and 86cm) in long jump in 1987; it has not been beaten yet. “I want Armenian athletes to beat my record,” he said.
