PORTABLE ANTIAIRCRAFT-ROCKET COMPLEXES CIRCULATION CONTROL TO BE ESTABLISHED IN CIS

Defense ministers of CIS states made a decision on the control over the export and import of portable antiaircraft-rocket complexes. As reported by RIA “Novosti”, head of Russian military department Sergey Ivanov, who participated in the sitting of the CIS member-states defense ministers held today in Kazakhstan town of Schuchinsk stated. It should be noted that the urgency of the given issue the minister elucidated the day before by the fact of repeated cases of usage of these weapons by the terrorists against air liners in different parts of the world, as, for example, the tragedy in Kenya last year, when a Jewish aircraft with 300 passengers aboard was brought down by means of “Strela” rocket complex of Soviet production. The members of the sitting viewed urgent issues concerning improvement of multilateral military and military-technical cooperation. In the minister’s words, the Council made a number of momentous decisions regarding the planning of joint measures for operative training of military forces of the CIS member-states for 2004 as well as the organization of the Collective forces on securing peace within the Commonwealth. Besides, a draft of issues connected with the functioning of the CIS states joint antiaircraft defense was examined during the sitting, Sergey Ivanov noted. “The regular important measure contributing to the improvement of interaction between our states in the sphere of collective antiaircraft defense will certainly become the joint training called “Military cooperation-2003″ which is to be held in the end of this August”, – the minister emphasized. It should be reminded that the defense ministers of 9 CIS states, namely Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghisia, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan participated in the sitting.
