AKHALKALAK REGION ADMINISTRATION HEAD INTENDS TO ASK ARMENIAN LEADERSHIP TO REDUCE THE ENERGY TARIFFS

Akhalkalak region administration head Artyusha Ambartsumyan intends to ask Armenian leadership to reduce the energy tariffs temporarily. During his conversation with «Arminfo» agency correspondent, he said, according to the contract signed December 2000, the energy produced in Armenia was received by the region for 2.5 cent per kilowatt. But January 7, 2001 the energy supply was stopped as the population had $ 35000 energy debts. During short period it was managed to repay the debts but the energy supply was not recommenced. The Akhlkalak region head is included in the government delegation of Georgia, headed by President Edward Shevarnadze that will visit Armenia October 25. «During the visit I want to make an attempt to persuade the Armenian leadership to sign an agreement having more acceptable terms and in 1-2 years to pay for the energy by usual tariffs», said Ambartsumyan. According to him, the energy in Akhalkalak is received only for 4-5 hours per day. «Armenian people live in Akhalkalak region and no one but the Motherland will help us», stated Ambartsumyan. It should be noted, the people, 98% of which are Armenians, living in Georgia Ninotsmindski region are supplied with energy for 24 hours.
