On September 29, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was re-elected as FIDE President in Khanty-Mansiysk.
He was challenged by former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov, who was supported by Garry Kasparov, Sovetski Sport reported.
Prior to the election, Kasparov made sharp statements, saying that the voting is illegal. As a result, the sitting was interrupted for half an hour. Later Ilyumzhinov made some concessions, substituting two representatives of the committee counting the votes.
It was followed by presentation of the two candidates’ pre-electoral programs and voting.
According to RIA Novosti, Ilyumzhinov was re-elected by a margin of 95 to 55 votes. Three delegates abstained, while two ballots were declared invalid.
