David Nalbandian was sent packing in Montpellier by Gilles Simon after surrendering several leads in the second round of Open Sud De France 2010.
Gilles Simon defeated David Nalbandian 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5
This match was all about squandered opportunities for Nalbandian. For all of the first set and most of the second, the Argentine was in complete control of the match. He won the first set handily and made his way to 5-4 in the second with the opportunity to serve out the match for the straight-set win. Unforced errors took over the Argentine’s game and Simon broke to level the set at 5-5.
Simon did not seem to be in much better shape than his opponent. He allowed Nalbandian to break him again. Once again the Argentine served for the match and once again he became an unforced error machine. Simon broke to force the tiebreaker.
Nalbandian briefly seemed to pull himself together. He got the mini-break and had 5-4 with two serves to once again close out the match. He was yet again unsuccessful. Simon won both points on Nalbandian’s serve and one on his own to take the second set.
The third set seemed to find Nalbandian in a better place mentally. The Argentine secured the first service break for the set, but a win simply wasn’t in the cards for Nalbandian on Thursday. Simon broke back and secured another to win the match, tennistalk.com reported.
