Top-seeded David Nalbandian advanced, while two-time runner-up Juan Monaco came up an opening-round loser at the $450,000 Movistar Open, the first clay-court event on the 2011 ATP World Tour calendar.
The Argentine Nalbandian was a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 winner against countryman Carlos Berlocq.
The second-seeded Monaco gave way to fellow Argentine Maximo Gonzalez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in 2 hours, 44 minutes at Las Condes. Monaco was topped by Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in last year's all-South American finale here and also fell in the 2008 title tilt in Vina del Mar against Chilean star Fernando Gonzalez, a four-time winner of this tournament, Sports Network reported.
