The Caucasus is a territory of strategic importance for the NATO. It is said in an address by NATO secretary general George Robertson, who is arriving in Yerevan on a two-day visit today, published in “Republic of Armenia” newspaper today’s issue. In his words, after the acts of terrorism of September 11, 2001 directed against the US the Caucasian region is being considered as a territory very important to our common security. This was also outlined as a prospect for profound cooperation between the NATO and its regional partners, of course including Armenia, he emphasized. In G. Robertson’s words, the NATO relations with its partners have always been based on the principle that security is rather being built with the neighbors of a certain state, than against them. The Euro-Atlantic partnership additionally speeds up the reforms in many partner countries, including practical issues referring to organization and control over armed forces in democratic societies. The partnership was marked with formation of a new security system for the entire Eurasian space – a comprehensive system based on actual cooperation. Armenia has an active role both in practical interaction and within the context of the political dialogue, Robertson noted. He emphasized NATO did not claim the leading role in facilitating peacemaking processes in the region. The responsibility should first of all be assumed by the countries of the region. Undoubtedly, the bloc is ready to contribute to endeavors aiming at strengthening peace in the region. “We should not nourish any illusions: the world community faces serious threats, as well as the Caucasian region encounters internal challenges. Gradual progress in possible via political consultations, contribution to democratic reforms, military training and cooperation and, of course, on the basis of frank and interested dialogue,” – the NATO head said.
