US SENATE TO INTRODUCE BILL EXTENDING TRADE BENEFITS TO ARMENIA

By the end of the week the legislation extending permanent normal trade relations to Armenian products will be introduced in the US Senate. The document specifically provides for cutting down taxes for import of Armenian products and intensification of American investment in the economy of Armenia. As reported by the Armenian Assembly of America, the initiators of discussion of the document in the upper chamber of US Congress, Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) called on their colleagues to co-sponsor legislation. In a letter sent to Senate colleagues they underscored that since its independence from the Soviet Union, Armenia has pursued free-market reforms within a democratic framework. It should be noted that over 100 Representatives already co-sponsor the legislation.
