TURKEY’S TOP GENERAL CANCELED HIS TRIP TO UNITED STATES AS A SIGN OF PROTEST

05.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Turkish chief of General Staff Huseyin Kivrikoglu canceled his trip to the United States scheduled for October 15-20 at the invitation of the US Joint Chief of Staff, General Henry Shelton.
A military spokeswoman of the Turkish General Staff confirmed that the postponement of the visit of general staff Huseyin Kivrikoglu to Washington is linked to the adoption by the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Congress of the resolution on the Armenian Genocide.
At the same time an official from Pentagon said that the US regrets but understands Turkey’s decision to cancel a visit to Washington by its army chief and hopes to reschedule his visit at a later date. –0–
