VIENNA UNIVERSITY PROPOSES TO HOLD ARMENIAN-TURKISH DISCUSSION ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE

The Vienna University appealed to the Turkish Historical Society and the Armenian National Academy of Science (NAS) with a proposal to conduct under the aegis of the University discussions of the tragic events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. As director of the NAS Genocide Museum Lavrenti Barseghian told Arminfo agency, Armenia accepted the proposal but has not officially confirmed its participation in the meeting yet. At the same time he added that the Armenian side is categorically against making the fact of the Armenian Genocide the topic of the discussion. “We intend to use the coming meeting as the opportunity to once again remind of the consequences of the tragic events of 1915 for the Armenians living in Ottoman Turkey”, – he said. According to the Turkish sources, upon the receipt of Armenia’s consent, the parties should exchange the archive materials after the examination of which they will meet in Vienna. The discussion is supposedly to be held in private in 2004.
