GREEK CHURCH LEADER BRANDS TURKS “BARBARIANS WHO SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN EU”

Head of the Greek Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Christodoulos provoked an international scandal, having publicly described Turks as “barbarians who should not be allowed to join the European Union”, BBC News reports. The Archbishop refused to comment on his statement made during the sermon delivered in the Athens’s Church, his speech being transmitted by the local TV channels. The hierarch noted that he only wanted the EU not to admit Turkey, for “barbarians could not come into the family of Christians”. “We cannot live together”, – Christodoulos emphasized. As BBC News reports, the remark of the Greek Archbishop did not become a sensation, his conservative views being well known. However his words drew an immediate response from Greek minister of foreign affairs to who has been working hard to improve relations with Turkey. He expressed his negative attitude to the hierarch’s statement underscoring that the Greek people have friendly feelings for Turkey. Turkish leadership’s reaction is not known yet.
