Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikolay Ryabov considered the opinion spread in the foreign counties that newly elected Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is Moscow’s protégé to be mere conjecture. “Aliyev became president on the basis of the Azeri people’s will”, – the diplomat emphasized. At the same time, according to some Russian sources, Ryabov noted that “Russia appreciates the sovereignty and foreign policy pursued by Azerbaijan unlike those of some neighbors, as it speaks about predictability and long-term stability”. “It is important for us that Azerbaijan tries not to become a “small change” and a zone available for the operations conducted by foreign military forces”, – the Russian diplomat said.
