ILHAM ALIYEV REDUCED HIS SALARY

New president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has addressed the country parliament asking to reduce the salary of the leader of the state, i.e. to him. In compliance with the law, the monthly salary scale of Aliyev Sr. was some $27 thousand. Now, at the instance of Aliyev Jr. the deputies reduced the remuneration for the president’s work five times – to $5400 monthly, and beginning in next January (due to the increase of minimal salary rate in the country) it will make $7200. Addressing the parliament sitting chairman of the human rights commission Siruz Tebrizli emphasized that the decision passed is of high political-moral importance along with the economic one. However, as “Vremya Novostey” Russian newspaper writes, even having curtailed his budget five times, Ilham Aliyev will receive almost the same salary, as his European counterparts and even more that the Russian president. In 2003 Vladimir Putin’s salary is a bit more than $3 thousand per month. And one can be sorry for Eduard Shevardnadze – some $200. US president George W. Bush gets $30 thousand a month. As noted by the newspaper, the average salary in Azerbaijan hardly reaches $80, pension – $30, while the living wage is $105. Even according to official data, almost 50% of the population live below the poverty line, while independent research indicates that the number exceeds 80%.
