NATIONAL MINORITIES OF GEORGIA CONCERNED OVER FORCING OF NATIONAL DISCORD

Leaders of national minorities residing in Georgia demand that the country leadership pay maximal attention to protection of their constitutional rights and maintaining stability in the state, says a statement, passed today by leaders of non-governmental organizations of ethnic minorities of Georgia, Georgian sources reported. According to the statement, referring to the situation in the country after the parliamentary election, the developments in Tbilisi and some Georgian regions carry back to the period, which entailed years of ethnic confrontation and intolerance. The slogans, advanced by some people, like “Not the Georgian nation elected the parliament,” “Georgians, lets protect our votes” aim to direct people’s sentiments to aggressive nationalism, simultaneously doubting electoral rights of residents of Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakhetia regions, the majority of whom represent national minorities, the statement notes. Thereupon, leaders of national minorities of Georgia called on the society, representatives of political parties, non-governmental organizations and the media not to succumb to provocative slogans, aiming at destabilization of the public order, demoralizing and splitting the society, instigating national dissension.
