Senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment Thomas de Waal deems progress in Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement in 2012 almost impossible.
“None of the parties is likely to shift its stance on the draft agreement rejected in Kazan in June 2011,” Mr. de Waal said.
The expert further noted that several anniversaries in 2012 increase skepticism over peaceful resolution of Karabakh conflict, citing the 20th anniversary of OSCE Minsk Group formation in 1992 as an example.
“In 2012 mediators will hope for conflict management but not settlement,” Trend quoted the associate as saying.
The tenth trilateral meeting between Presidents Sargsyan and Medvedev as well as Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev is scheduled for Jan 23. The three heads of state will focus on the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
