In case of aggravation of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Chechens are ready to assists Azeris to fight against Armenians. As reported by Yerkir On-line, Chechen advocate Marinbek Tamarov residing in Azerbaijan at present told Echo Baku newspaper. In his words, Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Vladimir Rushaylo “says one thing in Baku, while Putin discusses quite different issues with Armenians”. As Yerkir On-line notes, the Chechen and Afghani mercenaries took active part in the military operations in Nagorno Karabakh in 1993-94. There were cases when they were taken prisoners by the Nagorno Karabakh defense forces. Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev stated in his interview to a Russian TV company in 1995, that he only came the second-best in the battle against the Karabakh forces at Mardakert.
