Yesterday the Turkish government under the chairmanship of prime minister Recep Erdogan sanctioned sending a Turkish contingent to Iraq to “stabilize situation” in the country. Erdogan has arrived at that hard and not popular in Turkey decision after Ambassador J. Cofer Black, coordinator for counterterrorism at the US Department of State, pledged last week that the United States will apply force against fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), if they set out against Turkish military, Turkish media reported. Sections of the PKK (enlisted by the US among terrorist organizations) are based in the north of Iraq and seek after independence of Kurdish regions of Turkey. The size of the Turkish contingent in Iraq is not specified yet. It is supposed to be located in Sunni regions – to the north and west of Baghdad. According to the sources, a vote over the issue may be held at the parliament already today.
