The supreme legislative body of California – the State Assembly – has approved of a bill, according to which April 24 will be marked as the Day of commemoration of the victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey. As reported by “Arminfo” agency, the resolution has overcome the last obstacle in the state legislation preventing official recognition of the Day of Commemoration of the victims by California. Last week the bill was approved by the US Senate and the Californian Assembly. In the words of Senator Chuck Poochigian, the return to the events of 1915 is especially important for American Armenian families, which lost relatives in the course of the slaughter or deportation. In spite of the fact that the events took place long time ago and very far from the US, the lives of many Californians were contiguous to the genocide somehow or other. Chuck Poochigian pointed out numerous attempts to review the events of that tragic period for the Armenian people. “Official recognition of the Armenian Genocide is necessary to prevent such crimes against the humanity in the future,” – the Senator added.
