EU EXPECTS POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS OSCE NEW PROPOSALS ON KARABAKH FROM ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN

The European Union (EU) expects that Armenia and Azerbaijan will have a positive attitude towards new proposals of the OSCE Minsk Group (MG) on settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Italian ambassador to Armenia Marco Clemente told “Arminfo” agency. In his words, the year 2004 will create new opportunities for settlement of the Karabakh problem and the European Union expects the parties to conflict to contribute to the OSCE MG activities as far as possible. The EU calls Armenia and Azerbaijan to hold active negotiations, which have no alternatives in the conflict settlement, the ambassador said. He also noted that the European Union was ready to contribute to the OSCE efforts directed to the conflict settlement, as well as be more active in the settlement process and post-conflict rehabilitation. At the same time the EU is flatly against the solution of the conflict by use of force, the ambassador noted, adding, at that the organization considers the risk of possible conflict exacerbation rather serious in case the negotiation process lingers.
