UN expert on Human Rights Dr. Alfred de Zayas expressed the opinion that “it would be a positive step for the Turkish government to offer Armenian people a possibility of return to their historic homeland”. De Zayas made this statement addressing the public gathering organized by Armenian Dashnaktsutyun party in Toronto the other day. In his words, such a precedent took place in Yugoslavia in 1995, when, due to the Dayton resolution, Bosnia Muslims were allowed to return to their homeland. In the context of the Genocide in Rwanda, all Hutus and Tutsies were given the right to return to their homes, as the resolution says, in safety and dignity”, – Zayas stated, drawing a parallel with the Armenian Genocide. The expert confirmed his earlier uttered opinion that the Armenian Genocide in 1915 meets the UN convention of 1948. At the same time Zayas noted: “If Turkey aspires to enter the European Union, if Turkey aspires to join the club, as a conditio sine qua non (condition without which not), can be expected that they apologize and that they make an offer of restitution. I don’t think that it is that difficult, that hard, that impossible for the Turkish government to apologize. They don’t have the worry of punishing anybody because no official responsible for the Genocide against the Armenians lives these days, but they do have the responsibility to grant restitution.”
