Armenian organizations of Abkhazia have denied the reports being lately spread by Georgian media that local Armenians are oppressed. “We were surprised to get to know that Armenians are allegedly forming a liberation committee aiming at protection from the Abkhazian terror,” says a statement spread by “Krunk” Armenian cultural-philanthropic association the other day. Abkhazian Armenians were specifically exasperated at the report that in the course of many years the Armenian community allegedly squanders away assistance being received from abroad. “We state with all the responsibility that since 1994 the Armenian community of Abkhazia has not received any financial assistance,” the statement notes. In the opinion of “Krunk” association president Galust Trapizonian, such reports are directed at instigation of ethnic dissention in Abkhazia. In his turn Abkhazian foreign minister Sergey Shamba thereupon stated nothing threatens the Armenian community, which is one of the most numerous in Abkhazia. “Such reports are merely provocation that will not do good to their authors, who pursue the goal of splitting the society,” he emphasized, “Regnum” agency reported. It should be noted that the information that Armenians are oppressed in Abkhazia was spread by “Rezonansi” Tbilisi newspaper and “Gruzia.ru” portal.
