Atom Egoyan’s “Ararat” film, telling about the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, planned to be shown in Turkey January 16, is postponed. As reported by “Radical” Turkish newspaper, the reason is the active protest of local nationalist organizations, which consider that the film backs the historical Armenian thesis and disgraces Ottoman soldiers. Specifically, “Idealistic Hearths” radical organization considers demonstration of “Ararat” a traitorous move. In its activists’ opinion, by authorizing the screening of the film in the country the ruling Justice and Development Party approves of the actions of Armenians, who are enemies of Turkey. “Belge” company, which had bought the right to show the film in the country, did not specify until when is the film screening postponed. Meanwhile, as reported by “Hurriyet” Turkish newspaper, director of the film Atom Egoyan was thereupon bewildered. He noted that he expected more detailed explanations of the motives of banning the film in Turkey. In the director’s words, the prohibition is due to taking nationalistic threats too seriously.
