The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has launched a major campaign against the ban of showing Atom Egoyan’s “Ararat” film in Turkey. Previous to that, January 6 the Armenian National Committee of Canada also undertook a similar action, expressing protest against feebleness of the Turkish government in the face of the pressure of local nationalist forces, who hamper the film screening in the country. The ANCA has started collection of signatures under a statement addressed to the US State Department and American media. The statement specifically notes that even 89 years after the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire the Turkey’s attitude remains unchanged. “As long as oppression of national minorities continue in Turkey, the Turkish society cannot be democratized or move forward to join the ranks of civilized nations,” the statement says.
