KHACHKAR MONUMENT OPENS IN KAUNAS

Within the framework of celebration of the 1000-th anniversary of prominent Armenian poet and philosopher Grigor Narekatsi a monument khachkar (cross stone) opens in Lithuanian Kaunas city today. As reported by the Assembly of European Armenians, the khachkar is created by Nagorno Karabakh sculptor Robert Askarian with the financial support of the Ministry of Education of Lithuania and the Kaunas City Administration. “The Lithuanian society became familiar with the works of Narekatsi owing to the translations of Lithuanian poet Agidas Gedy, made in 1999. The monument will become a peculiar symbol of friendship between the Armenian and Lithuanian nations,” chairman of the Armenian Union of the Kaunas district, member of the Assembly of European Armenians Vahan Arzumanian said. In his words, the union plans to issue a documentary about Armenian khachkars, where parallels between them and Lithuanian and Celtic crosses will be drawn. The idea of the film was born after organizing a photo exhibition about Armenian khachkars in Kaunas, V. Arzumanian said.
