104 Congressmen addressed US president George W. Bush a letter demanding to use the term “genocide” in his annual speech April 24 on “Sufferings of Armenians in World War II.” Expressing certain concern over it and specifically referring to diplomatic sources in Washington “Radical” Turkish newspaper notes that under the conditions of availability of the present tension in the Turkish-American relations one can expect unforeseen actions from the Bush administration. As reported by “Arminfo” agency, some observers suppose that the position of the Armenian lobby in the House of Representatives has become firmer in the situation formed, as many people accuse Turkey of refusal to more closely cooperate with the US in the Iraqi issue. Thus, observers doubt that in the issue of putting the Armenian Genocide on the Congress agenda the US administration “will take the Turkish side” again. According to the same source, Turkish Congressional Caucus members are also worried with the opportunity for repeated appearance of a bill on the Genocide. They are especially concerned that being displeased with the Turkish position in the Iraqi issue “the Jewish lobby, which was traditionally at one with the Turkish group” can refuse support to the Turkish Caucus. Let us remind that the other day Senator Chuck Poochigian representing Fresno submitted a bill proposing to mark April 24 as a commemoration day of the victims of the Armenian Genocide for consideration by the Congress upper chamber.
