SOME 250 THOUSAND ARMENIANS LIVE IN GEORGIA, ALMOST TWICE MORE ACCORDING TO UNOFFICIAL DATA

According to the returns of the population census held in 2002, some 250 thousand Armenians live in Georgia. Meanwhile, according to unofficial data, the number of Armenians is up to 400 thousand. For the most part they live in Tbilisi, Samtskhe-Javakhetia, Tsalka and Marneuli regions, as well as in Adzharia and Abkhazia. In Georgia there are 13 Armenian churches and 154 Armenian schools, where some 28 thousand pupils study. A whole range of Armenian non-governmental organizations also run their activities in the country, including the Union of Armenians of Tbilisi, Sayat-Nova cultural and education society, Union of Armenians of Adzharia, Charles Aznavour association, Javakhk organization and Virk organization, which is not registered. Since 1920 in Georgia Gruziya newspaper is being issued in Armenian. The Lighthouse, Daybreak, Source and New Generation newspapers are published once a month.
