IAEA closely following issue of Armenia nuke plant amid threats of attack

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is aware of media reports referring to a "threat of use of force against a peaceful nuclear installation", the Agency told PanARMENIAN.Net.

“We follow this matter closely,” IAEA said in response to an request for comment on a statement made by Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry, whose spokesman hinted that Azerbaijan could strike the Metsamor nuclear plant in Armenia.

In an interview with France 24, Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan said that Azerbaijan's threat "is a threat to the broader region, a threat in fact to their own people."

The situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, escalated on July 12, with Azerbaijan launching three unsuccessful infiltration attempts in the next four days. The Azerbaijani military also used large caliber grenade launchers and combat drones to target civilian homes in several border settlements in Armenia. Four servicemen of the Armenian army were killed, while Azerbaijan reported 12 deaths.
