Klaar: Heartwarming to see Armenian aid sent to Turkey

European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar has said that Armenia's sending of humanitarian aid to Turkey is "heartwarming".

"In the face of so much tragedy in [Turkey] it is heartwarming to see the support that its neighbor [Armenia] has provided and the positive response this has engendered," Klaar said.

As reported earlier, Armenian trucks loaded with humanitarian aid crossed the land border to Turkey to deliver essentials to people in earthquake-stricken areas.

The land border between Armenia and Turkey has been closed since April 1993. However, in July 2022 the Turkish Ministry for Foreign Affairs announced that the two countries plan to reopen the border "at the earliest possible date", albeit only for third party nationals.

With chances of finding more survivors growing more remote, the toll in Turkey and Syria from Monday's earthquake and major aftershocks rose above 33,000 and looked set to keep growing.
