U.S. welcomes Turkey playing a “productive role” in Armenia-Azerbaijan process

The United States welcomes Turkey playing a “productive role” in resolving the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller told a briefing on Thursday, December 14.

Miller’s remarks came after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in Baku earlier on Thursday that Ankara encourages peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He also said that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia will have a positive effect on normalization between Turkey and Armenia.

When asked whether the matter was discussed at a meeting between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Fidan last week, Miller have a positive response.

“So I will say that in all of our conversations – or all the conversations between Secretary Blinken and Foreign Minister Fidan – that is a topic that comes up for conversation.

“So I won’t give a specific readout, but that is something that they regularly discuss when they either get together in person or when they talk on the phone. We welcome Turkey playing a productive role in resolving this conflict.
