Envoy: Withdrawal of Russian military base from Armenia not on the table

Russian Ambassador to Yerevan Sergei Kopyrkin has said the withdrawal of the Russian military base from Armenia is not on the table, RIA Novosti reports.

“I am not aware of such signals. I am guided by the official statements that were made from the Armenian side, in particular, that there is no question of withdrawing the base,” Kopyrkin said.

“There have been no such signals from the Russian side either,” the ambassador said, answering when asked whether there had been any signals from Yerevan about the closure of the Russian base in Gyumri and the withdrawal of Russian border guards.

The 102nd Russian military base is stationed in Armenia in accordance with the 1995 interstate agreement between Moscow and Yerevan. On August 20, 2010, the Russian Federation and Armenia extended the validity of the agreement on the deployment of the base until 2044. The 102nd Russian military base has an airbase at Erebuni Airbase in Yerevan. The airbase personnel are on combat duty for air defense in the United Air Defense System of the CIS countries.
