Aliyev threatens, demands ‘Zangezur corridor’ again

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has once again issued threats against Armenia, reiterating his demand for a 'Zangezur corridor.' During a meeting on transport issues, he stated that Armenia must "fulfill its obligations" and guarantee uninterrupted connectivity between different parts of Azerbaijan.

"As on international platforms and during bilateral contacts with Armenia, we consistently emphasize one issue: unimpeded transit from Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan must be ensured. There should be a convenient and free passage without any checks or obstacles," he said, as reported by Minval.az .

Aliyev claimed that Azerbaijan has no territorial claims against Armenia but added that in November 1920, Soviet authorities "took Western Zangezur from Azerbaijan," calling it a crime against the Azerbaijani people.

"We have not forgotten and will not forget Zangezur. Once again, I repeat—we have no territorial claims against Armenia. However, Armenia must fulfill its commitments by ensuring unhindered transit from Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan," he said.

He also asserted that the 'Zangezur corridor' has gained international significance, according to Turan.

"Today, the term 'Zangezur corridor' is already a recognized expression globally, and we are taking practical steps to open it," he stated.

Commenting on Armenia's proposed 'Crossroads of Peace' initiative, Aliyev dismissed the idea as unfeasible.

"This so-called 'project' is worthless without Azerbaijan… If you truly want to implement it, you must first turn to Azerbaijan, because without us, it is just a piece of paper. Our conditions are fair, based on international law and Armenia’s own commitments," Aliyev declared.

Reiterating the necessity of unhindered movement, he stressed that "transit from Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan should be free, convenient, and without any checks or obstacles."

Armenia has repeatedly stated that it rejects the concept of corridors in its approach to regional connectivity. At the same time, Yerevan has submitted proposals to Baku regarding two unresolved points in the peace treaty, one of which concerns the unblocking of transport links, though details have not been disclosed.
