ECHR rules on 16 cases regarding Armenia, finds 15 violations

In 2024, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) reviewed 16 applications concerning Armenia and issued corresponding decisions. In 15 of these cases, the court recognized violations of rights, while in one case, no violation was found. This information was reported by the Council of Europe.

Among the published judgments, six involved violations of the right to liberty and security, and three pertained to breaches of freedom of expression, as reported by Panorama.am .

In the past year, the ECHR dismissed 52 applications from Armenia, compared to 510 rejections in 2023 and 177 in 2022.

It is noted that the overall statistics for 2024 reflect the outcomes of reforms implemented in recent years. Although the number of applications submitted to the court remains significant at 60,350, this figure has decreased by 8,100 (11.8%) compared to the end of 2023 and by 14,300 (19.2%) compared to 2022.

Approximately three-quarters of the applications submitted to the ECHR are related to five countries: Turkey (21,600), Russia (8,150), Ukraine (7,700), Romania (3,850), and Greece (2,600).

In 2024, Armenia submitted 949 new applications to the ECHR, compared to 836 in 2023 and 1,232 in 2022.

In the ECHR's annual report, Armenia is mentioned in the context of interstate cases pending before the court. Specifically, Armenia has filed four applications against Azerbaijan and one against Turkey, while Azerbaijan has submitted two applications against Armenia.

According to the report, alongside 12 interstate cases related to conflicts worldwide, the ECHR is also handling approximately 10,500 individual applications arising from these same conflicts.
