Spanish parliamentarian Jon Iñarritu has highlighted that Azerbaijan is promoting the so-called 'Western Azerbaijan' narrative to rewrite history, justify the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, and pursue new territorial occupations from Armenia.
"As is known, Azerbaijan has launched a new propaganda campaign, attempting to rewrite history with claims of 'Western Azerbaijan,' encompassing almost the entire territory of Armenia. This narrative aims to justify the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh Armenians and prepare the ground for a new invasion by labeling Armenian lands as 'historic Azerbaijan,'" Iñarritu stated, as reported by Armenpress.
He noted that such rhetoric allows Baku to intensify diplomatic and political pressure on the European Union.
"It is quite clear that the ultimate goal of these statements is to exert diplomatic pressure on the EU, trying to align the organization's actions more closely with Azerbaijan's interests, often leveraging energy deals," emphasized Jon Iñarritu.
Addressing the EU monitoring mission, the parliamentarian mentioned that its purpose is to monitor the situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and maintain stability.
"The EU monitoring mission focuses on observing the situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, promoting stability, and ensuring compliance with international agreements to prevent further conflict. In this regard, Azerbaijan's concerns about the mission are hard to understand, especially for a country that ostensibly seeks to sign a peace agreement," noted the parliamentarian.
In his opinion, Baku's complaints against the monitoring mission may be due to pressures from Turkey or Russia.
"The mission is not intended to favor one side over the other, nor does it engage in intelligence activities. Its primary goal is to facilitate the peaceful resolution of disputes, which undoubtedly contradicts Azerbaijan's attempts to invade Armenia once again," observed Iñarritu.
Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that Armenia should start a dialogue with the so-called 'Western Azerbaijan' community, which in the neighboring country refers to almost the entire territory of Armenia, including Yerevan.
