EU commissioner: Brussels monitors Baku military trials

The European Parliament held a discussion titled "Azerbaijan’s illegal detentions and sham trials of Armenian captives, including Nagorno-Karabakh’s top political representatives."

European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen participated in the debate and, in his concluding remarks, stated that the European Commission has been monitoring the military trials that began in Baku on January 17, 2025, according to 1lurer.am .

“We are aware that human rights organizations have raised concerns about the fairness of these trials and the treatment of the accused. Many of you here today have also expressed similar concerns.

We take these concerns very seriously and closely follow the developments. The right to a fair trial must be upheld and respected,” Jørgensen emphasized.

He added that the EU’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus is also monitoring the situation and conveying Brussels’ position to Azerbaijani authorities.

Speaking about EU-Azerbaijan relations, Jørgensen noted that cooperation is based on key principles, including respect for human rights and the rule of law.

“The EU will continue urging the Azerbaijani government to fulfill its international obligations, including ensuring due process and the right to a fair trial. We will use all available channels to call on Azerbaijan to provide dignified and safe conditions for detainees. Reports of torture and mistreatment must be promptly and impartially investigated,” the commissioner stressed.

According to him, the military trials in Baku are linked to the broader process of establishing lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We continue to call on both Armenia and Azerbaijan to build on their achievements and advance toward a full normalization of relations. It is crucial that both governments guide their societies along this path.

The EU will remain engaged in this process, using all available tools. We stand ready to assist both sides in their dialogue aimed at achieving sustainable peace,” Jørgensen concluded.

The European Parliament discussed a resolution on Azerbaijan’s illegal detention and prosecution of Armenian prisoners, including Nagorno-Karabakh’s political representatives. The resolution was introduced by Francisco Assis, Vasile Dîncu, Nacho Sánchez Amor, Evin Incir, Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, and Giannis Maniatis on behalf of the S&D group.
